Katie asked: So, I’ve been dealing with an eating disorder on and off over the past year. I’m 5’10 and I’ve dropped from 190 to 145 and wouldn’t mind losing another 5 pounds, but overall am fairly happy with my weight. My eating disorder has consisted of basically, anywhere from 500-1,500 calories per day some days in one sitting sometimes in several. Exercising about 3-4 days per week burning about 300 calories per workout with both cardio and weight lifting. Now, I would like to adopt a healthier diet, but would like to do so without gaining back any weight. Any advice on doing this would be great as I realize my recent diet has not been very healthy.

imicola asked: My sister has an eating disorder and is VERY thin. She is in a clinic for young people with eating disorders (she is 27 so the oldest person in there).
She doesn’t want to be thin – so she is not a typical anorexic, but she seems to have some abnormal relationship with food. I took her out for the afternoon on Sunday and she just wanted to eat lots of junk food – she tells me that the clinic let her do this, and that they know if they are making themselves sick etc. She ate a piece of apple pie, ice cream, a hot chocolate, a coffee, 3 small toffee tarts, some carrot cake and some fuit juice.
I’ve spoken to my mum about this and she agrees that she is binging, but we just cant say anything to her as her moods are foul, and she just gets really mad.
I have to take her out tonight but dont want it to end up with her binging – any ideas on what I could do with her, or how I can deal with this as it makes me very uncomfortable knowing that she is binging when with me.
Yes, she is definately binging on sweet foods. But Im really worried that she is throwing up afterwards. I know they are meant to do tests and things that will show this, but Im just worried that maybe she doesnt tell them everything she eats when she is out, and then throws it up again. I also know she has sneaked in sweets and things without telling the staff at the clinic. I guess I want to be able to take her out for an hour, without the worry of her binging on cakes and things…but I dont really know where to take her as there is nothing around the clinic. My mum is going to speak to the doctors this week about the binging – so hopefully they can suggest something.

My mom found out about my bulimia but simply does not understand. She’s convinced that I am just depressed but I am not. I am not sad, I go out with my friends, I don’t want to die. I explained this to her but she still thinks I am.
My dad does not know about my eating disorder yet. I need my dad to support me and help me get treatment for this. But I don’t know how to do this since he is male and might not understand as well.

If I don’t want to suffer from an eating disorder, what can I do to avoid getting one?

love1234 asked: I don’t want to tell anyone that I have an eating disorder (bulemia). Although, I know I need help. I want to do this on my own because I am afraid of telling someone. I don’t have anyone I trust enough to tell, and at this point in my life I can not take time off work to get help. Is there a support group I can go to online for help? I need some answers please

. I’ve been dealing with this since I was 15 and I am 22 now.

Angel asked: Whenever i eat in public, eg my school canteen, no matter what im eating or drinking i feel like everyone is watching me eat/drink. When that thought appears it feels like im panicking and i freak out inside.
Could this be the start of a disorder?
Also im 13 and a healthy weight for my height.
I do wish i were thinner because my bum and thighs look a bit out of proportion.

I have a friend who’se 5’11 and she weighs 105 pounds! Could she possibly have an eating disorder? I know shes not bulemic because she never uses the bathroom, but whenever we’re at a restaurant she eats a few bites and claims to be full. She drinks only diet soda and never stops talking about her weight. She brags about being skinny, though. Could she have an eating disorder or is she just really skinny?

Mad Season asked: I realize that this is a sensitive topic, and many people may not even realize they have this disorder, but if you’ve learned ways to help control it I’d really appreciate your insight. I lose track of what I eat and how much, and it wasn’t until recently that I realized I had a problem and that it’s starting to make changes in my health.
Did you seek professional help?
Do you have methods of keeping track of the eating that have helped you reduce it?
What else have you done to control the issue?
I just wanted to add:
I live in a household where I am not the one grocery shopping. Those in charge of that do not buy healthy foods. My cholesterol is too high for someone my age and I believe it is due to the food available to me not only when I binge, but all day long.
Also, an overall dieting plan is not what I’m after. I’m not overweight at all.
Thanks!
Paul Ding:
Do your research before answering. It’s classified in the DSM-IV under eating disorder not otherwise specified as an expressive disorder.

I’ve heard that dentists will be able to tell if you’re bulimic because it leaves a certain pattern on your teeth that most dentists would be able to identify right away… But how would your doctor be able to tell if you had an eating disorder? Wouldn’t they just think you were losing weight? How would they know it was an ED?
