Question posed by PleaseHelp: How many calories a day do people with anorexia typicall eat?
I’ve heard some say anything under 1200 and others say no one with anorexia would eat more than 300 calories a day, so I was just wondering.
No, I’m not going to eat that little.
Thanks in advance! :)

Keep in mind that there are different types of eating disorders, combinations of disorders and different personalities. Anorexia is not defined by cal counts, it’s defined by the mental disorder and the persons habits. Those poor people who live in Africa and can’t eat aren’t anorexic even though they probably only consume a few hundred cals a day

I am dieting now and there are some day when I only eat 900 cals, but my diet is so full of veggies that I don’t even notice I am hungry. But if all someone at was a 150 calorie soda and a piece of chocolate cake, that 900 calories would be considered anorexic.

Anything under 500 is in the dangerous starvation zone. If a person is only getting this little (by choice) they probably have some type of disorder.

The only thing I can think of is a family sat round a table laughing with a girl or boy not joining in. It wouldnt necessarily suggest bulimia, it could represent anything.

Different treatments are available depending on the kind of overeating. There are treatments that target anorexia, bulimia or binging, or a combination. The most effective method of combating overeating is to combine treatments. Overeating can be cured completely, and it will involve some behaviour modifications, a healthy eating program, education, and medication, if needed.

The main thing to do is to determine the cause of the eating disorder. There are specialists who can help you out. Reasons for overeating may be genetic, health factors, stress, or psychological factors.

Eating disorders don’t come with magic cures. Eating disorder treatments usually last a long time and would involve great changes in your lifestyle. As with any type of addiction, a step-by-step treatment process works better than a so-called, short term fix. Since food is needed for us to survive, food addiction is more difficult than alcohol and drug addiction.

Cravings must also be addressed in any treatment for an overeating disorder. When a person can’t eat what he wants, withdrawal symptoms tend to show and that can cause the individual to get even more depressed and turn to eating more.

Among the treatments for overeating disorders you may find several methods used, including individual and group therapy sessions, counselling for the entire family, nutrition counselling and how to prevent a relapse of the disorder. Overeaters will also be given tips on how to keep their compulsion under control. This may include keeping a journal of what and when eating occurs, exercise, setting goals and dealing with responses to boredom, stress and other “triggers” that may cause overeating.

Rigid dietary plans usually don’t work on those addicted to food because the real problems with overeaters are so varied. In fact, a food addict who tries one diet plan after another usually ends up with the “yo-yo dieting syndrome,” where they lose weight for a period of time, but gain it all (and then some) back when they resume their normal eating habits.

You’ll find that making small changes continuously in your eating habit will enable you to overcome you eating problem. You can seek help from your physician or research on line about your eating disorder.

menu planning, write down everything you’re going to eat the night before making sure you have at least 60 grams of protein and 1800 calories (less will make your body think your starving and encourage binging)
