I was a binge eater for about 2 years. You realize it when.. it kind of contols you rather than you controlling it. I did get therapy for it, which really didnt help. You cant just quit cold turkey! You have to realize yourself that it’s unhealthy, and slowly but surely get rid of it. It may take a while to finally stop.
That paul mckenna guy on tlc has some good Ideas. Maybe one will work for you!
I think knowing when you have crossed the line or knowing that over eating has become a problem is when you can answer yes to any of these questions:
When you feel extremely full, do you still continue to eat to the point of reflux or maybe even vomiting occurs?
Do you over-eat mainly when you are alone?
Do you notice that when you are eating around a group of people and you stop eating when everyone else does, you can’t wait to get home so you can eat more b/c you don’t feel satisfied?
Do you feel guilty after eating?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions, I would say that you may already have a problem or you are leading yourself into a problem.
As far as recovering without help, here are my thoughts. I am a firm believer in healing without medicine in as many ways as possible, but I am no Tom Cruise, however people want to treat medical issues is clearly up to them, but for my body, I prefer natural resources. I am a firm believer that God will help you overcome anything in life, prayer is so unbelievably healing, just ask him and he will help you!
It is also important to have a support group and talk to others who are going through the same thing as you so that you may share and get tips and how to overcome.
Here are some tips to help you stop eating when you are satisfied:
1.Don’t eat in front of the television, sit down at a table and set the scene for the meal, even if it is lunch, try to set a scene and don’t have any other attractions beside you and your meal and company if present. This will help you recognize the food you are eating, sometimes when we sit in front of the T.V. and eat, we finish our meal without even tasting it because were not paying attention to the food, were looking at the T.V.
2. After each bite set your utensils down and concentrate on that one bite, chewing slowly and going through in your head all the flavors you taste – this will recognize and give yourself a sense of satisfaction.
3. Bland out your food – that is simple, we tend to not eat as much if it is not drenched in salt, sugar, seasonings, and fat (meaning dressings, cheese, etc).
4. Don’t keep those foods in your house that you have weakness for or tend to really over indulge on.
5. When going to the store to buy groceries, eat right before to keep from impulse buying extra food and sweets.
I have a BS in nutrition and have taken many classes over eating disorders…Good luck and I wish the best for you!!
