How can my friend fight bulimia and gain back her metabolism?

Bulimia nervrosa is a mental disorder. Fix the mind first.
that’s so sad to hear. one of my best friends went through the same thing. therapy would be very beneficial. if she’s not ready for that let her know that you’re there for her to talk to.
sufferers of bulimia often feel very ashamed and want to hide their problem. they are afraid people will be shocked and disgusted upon learning of their disorder. your friend probably needs to know that she has the support of her friends and family around her – however, if she’s not ready for that step, she should try to take her mind of food in any way possible. she should focus on other areas of her life even if it seems like a black hole.
what my friend did was start marathon training and other physical exercise. it’s good because it makes you *feel* something physically, that kind of intense sensation that bingeing gives, but there is a good feeling afterward instead of guilt and it’s working toward something positive. it will also help the metabolism bounce back.
in terms of the bingeing, try to make a pact with yourself not to buy any food yourself and only to eat while other people are around. that’s what really helped my friend because she would only binge in private and she would go to the store herself and buy tons of junk food. it also helped her eat normally using other people’s portions and types of food as examples. if you have to, leave your wallet at home when going out, or if you have to buy something only take a certain amount of money with you. (btw shopping is another great distraction).
anyway, the not eating in private thing can be hard, but if she can stick to that, she has no room to binge.

It sounds like she might be on the verge of becoming depressed. If possible, send her to a doctor who can then refer her to a clinical psychologist or somebody to talk to about her state of mind. At this stage I would not believe yet that she has full fledged Bulimia, I believe she might be able to pull out of it if she gets help for her depression. Only if it keeps going on and on, she might make it a bad habit and then it will become a serious problem.
A caring and supportive friend is an asset. I applaud your efforts to be with her in her darkest time. Bulimia is a eating disorder and intervention helps. See the attached site and hope it helps you in your journey with your friend.
Additionally, positive encouragement and motivation is very important. Be patient and understanding and work it through with her. Good Luck!
