How does bulimia using laxatives work?
I’m writing a paper for a health class and i’m just not too sure on how the laxatives part works. I know how the vomitting works inside and outside.
Things i’d like to know:
side effects (negative AND positive; including time frames if possible)
why it’s “better” than iduced vomitting
why it’s “worse” than iduced vomitting
how nutrition is obtained (ie the “marker” in vomitting)
how often one is compelled to purge
how often or how long one is compelled to binge
how long is the inteval in between “feeding periods”
I am open to facts from anyone qualified to diagnose eating disorders, to a person who has a friend who is/was, to someone who is currently/has suffered bulimia.
Please and Thanks

they overuse the laxatives..Like the pills they eat too many so they go to the bathroom all the time
umm negative side affects are no nutrition gets to the body the person becomes skin and bone. they can very possibly die..a person does it how ever often they think they should..my mom said she couldnt think of anything else but phantasize how much she would eat, then just plan when she would purge. its better because it doesnt affect the asophoguas, the acid practically kills it. ( i.e. ur throat.) i dont know y id be worse. i hope u get an A man, laterz
The idea behind use of laxatives in bulimia is to speed things through the digestive track so rapidly that nothing is absorbed in the digestion process. The side effects are numerous: overuse of laxatives can cause the person to be dependent on them to move their bowels. Overtime it can also reduce the tonicity in the muscles of the colon, causing chronic slow-transit constipation. It also greatly increases the chance of becoming dehydrated due to electrolyte imbalance. It can also cause a condition called Gastroparesis or “paralyzed stomach” in which the stomach fails to empty its contents in a normal amount of time. This causes early satiety, nausea, vomiting, and high amount of bacteria in the stomach. Lastly, excessive use of laxatives can lead to coma or even death.
Why is it better than vomiting? I don’t know that I would say it is either better or worse: they are bad for different reasons. Laxative use won’t cause the distinctive lesions in the esophogus and won’t strip enamel from teeth.
generally a person who uses both methods of purging will feel compelled to use laxatives every time they binge and they do not feel like vomiting got all of the food content out of their system. The interval varies from person to person so there is no one estimate that can be used.
Hope this helps.
Because they can eat and eat and then just go to the bathroom to get it all out. It is a little better than vomitting because if they make there self throw up to many times it can ruin there vocal chords and tear there throat up. You never gain weight when you puck because you throw up evrything that was in your stumic. Where lacsatives you eat and eat and eat and then you just **** it all out or you don’t even have to eat you just take one or two and well ya. i have had a friend who took lacitives and she still does but i am helping her out with it you can do a search on google about this stuff to. if you have any questions feel free to ask me!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure, it can work, but it can also be deadly.
Laxitives cause food to pass through the system bofore its nutrients have had time to be absorbed by the body. But by doing this, you are depleting the body of important fluids and electrolytes that are needed for every organ to function properly, including the heart.
Inducing vomiting however is damaging to the esophagus and can cause tears, swelling and scarring there. It also destroys the enamal of the teeth. Nutrition is obtained through it’s absorption in the small and large intestine, so any means in which food either passes to quickly (laxitives) or never makes it to the small/large intestine (vomiting) prevents adequate nutrition intake. One is compelled to purge when they feel they have taken in an excess of food. True binge eaters can consume as many as 20,000 calories in one sitting (ten times what you should get in a day). The interval between binging periods varies from person to person, but as time goes on, it usually becomes more frequent.
