What category does bulimia fall in under the IDEA?

Amanda asked:
I wasn’t even aware until yesterday that eating disorders are apparently covered by IDEA, and I’m not sure where they fall.
I need to know this information because I am writing an informational pamphlet about it for an introduction to intervention class.

It’s a disorder, lifelong. Psychological condition..? I don’t know which category, but if it falls under the act, what difference does it make? (Not sounding rude, just wondering why you need to know which category it falls under?)
In Alabama, bulimia could fall under the category of Other Health Impairment, although I’ve never seen a child placed for bulimia. This category can cover any medical or psychological condition which impacts the child’s educational performance. Other states should have a similar category, but the name may be different. OHI can cover ADHD, epilepsy, sickle cell anemia, ect.
In Colorado it may fit under “Physical Disorder.” Each state has its own labels for categories.
More likely, it is a condition that would qualify for a “504 Plan” which is for health conditions that cause problems for students but is not quite severe enough or long term enough to require an IEP.
See if your state Department of Education has an information section.
Probably OHI, other Health Impaired.
Bulimia is not covered under IDEA. If a child has bulimia and if affects their education they may be able to get a 504 plan to make modifications at school, but eating disorders are not addressed under IDEA.
