Matchstick: Bulimia

One video makers view of bulimia. Whether you agree or disagree with this view, why not leave a brief comment and let us know exactly what you think.

This was a spec pro-bono public service film done for about-face.org. A great site which promotes positive self-esteem in girls and women of all ages, sizes, races and backgrounds through a spirited approach to media education, outreach and activism. Body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders are more prevalent among females than males. This gender specificity is apparent in that over 90% of patients with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa are women (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).

A question asked by Starwolf79: How are learning and cognition affected by bulimia and anorexia nervosa?
Now that you had an opportunity to read more about hunger and eating behavior, discuss how learning and cognition are affected with bulimia and anorexia nervosa. Compare and contrast the two disorders. Remember to cite your responses. what does the research say about these disorders?

Most comprehensive answer:

Answer by skittlesss
1. lack of energy to concentrate.

2. often people with eating disorders constantly think about food and/or constantly telling themselves that they shouldn’t eat. they would be more likely to think about food, rather than their homework/studies.

3. the brain can’t function completely without all the nutrients it needs to sustain itself.

Living with bulimia

What do you think about this video on bulimia?

I just changed the words a bit but I cba to actually change them on the video!! Anyways: This is just something I wrote last night in about 10 mins when I was feeling bad.. it’s not very good :) it’s also my first (and probably last, this is waaay too complicated for me) ever video so please leave nice comments and rate!! I know it’s sooo emo, I think it was just my mood at the time but it wasn’t meant to be quite so! Oh, I know there are ‘?’s where I wanted ‘s but for some reason when I was making it, the computer kept replacing them so I just gave up, it’s annoying I know :) I don’t own any of the pics, if one belongs to you and you want me to take it down please just let me know and I’ll do my best :) With a throat so burned, and a smile so weak With a heart that skips the occasional beat Mouths work so hard to form a consoling word That we are silent We listen We wait But all we ever feel is hurt. Emotions roaring from stomach to bowl Hands become disturbingly cold Pushing down, down, further still Then erupting upwards Again and again and again and again No more, I promise Next time I’ll try harder, I’ll simply feel. Screaming in my head, aching in my chest I collapse in exhaustion, onto my bed Lying alone, I bite my lip How could I have let it come to this? Years of playing Russian Roulette Every day the gun held to my head Sleeves pulled down to cover the times I missed Why the hell can’t I get over this? Leave me alone, let me rest I swear I’ve tried my very best

It is well-known that bulimia can occasionally result in death if it is not treated and allowed to carry on. Bulimia is widely recognized, and it is known by over eating binges and causing oneself to purge. Other methods of purging include using laxatives or possibly diuretics. The distortion includes feeling fat when oftentimes that is not the case. The concept is tied to food and weight, and it is this view that is grossly out of touch with reality. What is ordinarily seen is around two years after puberty occurs, then bulimia can happen. Several additional psychological aspects include social pressures at school and feelings of depression.

The untreated bulimic can endure life threatening lack of adequate nutrition and increased loss of fluids. This illness can strike almost anyone if the situation is right, and some well-known women have passed away from the problems of bulimia. In the 1970s, performer Karen Carpenter suffered from this problem for several years. Her problem affected her heart so much that it simply killed her. Bulimia can be successfully taken care of, but clearly it is of critical importance to begin treatment quickly.

But if treatment doesn’t take place, then a long term situation can result in dangerously low levels of nutrients. Furthermore, serious constipation can be a consequence of overuse of laxatives. Further problems include the throat and mouth due to excessive subjection to stomach acid from so much throwing up. Also, that acid causes rapid tooth decay and even serious complications involving the gums. Needless to say life threatening problems entail heart and kidney injury. What happens is the frequent loss of body fluids will produce hazardously low levels of electrolytes within the body. That condition can certainly often cause heart failure. The rough fatality rate caused by bulimia is normally ten percent.

Effective treatment of this disorder involves the patient and family, family medical doctors, and professional psychiatric or psychological guidance and treatment. Also, it can be helpful to involve a licensed dietician so the appropriate diet can be given to help recover the body. Professional counseling will work to end the routine of binging and purging. Also, the patient will purposely be made aware of the possible dangers to life and health. Naturally there will be treatment designed to identify the issues that can cause the patient to engage in bulimic behavior. One crucial area of work is going to be to encourage the patient to relate in a more open fashion and focus on his or her inner thoughts.

Bulimia can be treated, but there needs to be urgent intervention. The patient’s relatives need to be involved and provide as much help as possible. Further supportive efforts may consist of group therapy as the patient works to get better from the disorder. Even so, the critical first action is for the bulimic person to admit to the problem. The realization must be present that one’s outlook and view about eating is altered and causing this problem.
