Women who are thin and have a waistline of 24-26 inches nowadays are perceived to be sexy and hot. “Thin is IN,” this is the common idea of people nowadays. Because of this, most youths are pressured to stay thin. With their desire to stay thin and be in, they starve themselves and this may lead to eating disorders. Starving oneself is not just the only eating disorder for one may also overeat and get obese due to loneliness and stress.

Three eating disorders are most common among teenagers and adults. Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder will be discussed in the succeeding paragraphs.

The first in the list is anorexia nervosa. Anorexia is a condition where one starves herself because she is so afraid to gain weight and become fat. People with anorexia also tend to exercise with too much passion and they do it every time they have the chance. Anorexics also suffer from low self-esteem and they wear baggy clothes to hide excessive weight loss.

Bulimia is another kind of eating disorder. Bulimia is a bit different from anorexia because bulimic people still eat well. The only problem is, after eating they force or induce themselves to vomit all the food they have consumed. This is done on a regular basis resulting to the body developing resistance to food. If this happens, the body will expel or remove all the food that enters the body through vomiting. Bulimics usually experience sore throats because of excessive vomiting.

The third eating disorder does not involve starvation or vomiting, but rather, overeating. This is called binge eating disorder. People suffering from stress, loneliness and depression are more prone to binge eating disorder. They will pacify themselves with comfort foods like chocolates, fatty and fried foods. They also have the tendency to eat even when not hungry that is why they become obese.

Though eating disorders vary, they still have common symptoms like low self-confidence, abnormal weight loss, withdrawal from family and friends, irregular heartbeat and their refusal to accept the truth about their condition.

Any treatment for such disorder will not take effect if the patient herself will not accept that she is suffering from eating disorder. After acceptance, treatment like psychological therapy and consultation with a nutritionist follows.

Eating disorders?

Tori L asked:

Why do so many people look down on others who suffer with eating disorders? An eating disorder is a disease and people can die from it.

Some think their fat
Some don’t even know why they do it
Some do it because they were abused
Some do it becasue of a broken family
Some because of a troubled childhood
Some because of depression

And I’m sure other reasons to.

I don’t think this is something to be mocking or laughing at. All that does is makes that person angry, and drives them deeper in the problem

taylor asked:

My friend claims she only makes herself throw up once a month, but when she does, she continuously does it for about a week. That’s followed by terrible depression. It seems she likes to hide her depression though so I never really know when she’s faking happiness. I’m happy she’s confided in me, but I don’t know if this is very serious or not. Should I take this lightly or try to get her help?

Thank you, not really the best way to resolve this but your answers are better than nothing.

How does celexa help with an eating disorder?

Casey J asked:

Celexa is used for depression but I recently found out it is also used to treat eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. I was wondering how it does this. Does it make you want to eat more? Are you so high you don’t care if your thin or not? Are you so tired it takes to much energy to be anorexic? What are the side effects? PLease anyone with any answers. Thanks
