Different treatments are available depending on the kind of overeating. There are treatments that target anorexia, bulimia or binging, or a combination. The most effective method of combating overeating is to combine treatments. Overeating can be cured completely, and it will involve some behaviour modifications, a healthy eating program, education, and medication, if needed.

The main thing to do is to determine the cause of the eating disorder. There are specialists who can help you out. Reasons for overeating may be genetic, health factors, stress, or psychological factors.

Eating disorders don’t come with magic cures. Eating disorder treatments usually last a long time and would involve great changes in your lifestyle. As with any type of addiction, a step-by-step treatment process works better than a so-called, short term fix. Since food is needed for us to survive, food addiction is more difficult than alcohol and drug addiction.

Cravings must also be addressed in any treatment for an overeating disorder. When a person can’t eat what he wants, withdrawal symptoms tend to show and that can cause the individual to get even more depressed and turn to eating more.

Among the treatments for overeating disorders you may find several methods used, including individual and group therapy sessions, counselling for the entire family, nutrition counselling and how to prevent a relapse of the disorder. Overeaters will also be given tips on how to keep their compulsion under control. This may include keeping a journal of what and when eating occurs, exercise, setting goals and dealing with responses to boredom, stress and other “triggers” that may cause overeating.

Rigid dietary plans usually don’t work on those addicted to food because the real problems with overeaters are so varied. In fact, a food addict who tries one diet plan after another usually ends up with the “yo-yo dieting syndrome,” where they lose weight for a period of time, but gain it all (and then some) back when they resume their normal eating habits.

You’ll find that making small changes continuously in your eating habit will enable you to overcome you eating problem. You can seek help from your physician or research on line about your eating disorder.

A teenager without problems is like a fish out of water. It doesn’t happen often. Whether it be peer pressure to the rebel child to the one who’s being bullied, the list can continue for quite a long time, and it’s all part of becoming a grown up. When you think about it though, the real problem starts when your child can’t tell the difference between one and all the other problems they have encountered this week. Everything rolls into one ball, and that one ball is taking up all of their space.

Have you ever seen a bunch of teenaged girls at the mall in a clothing store? I’ve seen toothpicks larger than some of them, yet they’re still saying the outfit they just tried on makes them look fatter than they already are. Alright, so she’ll probably eat carrots and broccoli for a week and feel all better. Isn’t she lucky? Vegetables are good for you, and tomorrow she’s probably going to eat a second helping at supper. No problem here. The problem starts when her friend Sue starts vomiting after every meal, or not eating at all because she thinks she’s fatter than her friend in the first place. Sue needs medical intervention, and she needs it fast.

Girls especially have a hard time growing up. They have all of these things going on with their bodies they don’t understand. What they need most of all is good nutrition, because there are many aspects of their growing stage that depend on that one factor. Take away good nutrition, and you’re headed for a bunch of potential problems, some of which can not only be dangerous, but can also result in loss of life.

Bulimic, anorexic or some other type of eating disorder is still a medical issue, and can become one that endangers your teen’s life. If that’s not enough, you have to consider the mental impact such things can have on them as well. Their ideals for the perfect body weight ends up being the perfect something else if they reach their irrational goal for weight. No matter what they are told about how good they look or how perfect they are it doesn’t matter to them. It’s their feelings of imperfection that fuel the fires of this disorder.

If it ever comes to the time where you need to make the devastating decision to admit your daughter into a rehab facility due to her eating disorder, please keep this in mind. She will get the help she needs to not only save her now, but also later in life when other addictions and problems come knocking on her door, begging to be let in.

Eating disorders?

Tori L asked:

Why do so many people look down on others who suffer with eating disorders? An eating disorder is a disease and people can die from it.

Some think their fat
Some don’t even know why they do it
Some do it because they were abused
Some do it becasue of a broken family
Some because of a troubled childhood
Some because of depression

And I’m sure other reasons to.

I don’t think this is something to be mocking or laughing at. All that does is makes that person angry, and drives them deeper in the problem
