We all know that Anorexia is a major eating disorder. When a person suffers from it, that person starves himself and looses a tremendous amount of weight. Though these people become extremely thin and skinny, they go on thinking and are convinced that they are overweight and fat.

Anorexics are extremely scared of becoming fat and their eating habits develop around this fear. This generally starts some way around the beginning of puberty. Some of the common ways by which they lose weight are: excessive exercising, taking laxatives, vomiting after eating or not eating.

People suffering from anorexia often develop very strange or weird eating habits like refusing to eat in the presence of some one. They may even do things like prepare a huge feast or meal for others and not eat a morsel or refuse to eat any of it themselves.

Generally it is considered to be a common obsession among people who belong categorically to the higher socio-economic class. Even among people who are involved in activities or jobs where being skinny is considered good, like dancing, theater, modeling etc.

There are a number of symptoms tagged with Anorexia. These symptoms are, body weight that is not right for the age, build and height is usually 15% below normal, loss of around 3 menstrual cycle, refusal to eat in public, intense anxiety, extreme weakness , coarse brittle skin, breath becoming short, obsession with calorie intake . But it is possible that people may or may not show them at all.

Anorexia comes along with a number of medical risks. These may be: Shrinking of bones, loss of mineral, low temperature, irregularity in heartbeat and osteoporosis and bulimia.

Also, a sustained consumption of laxatives is extremely harmful to the body. It wears out the bowel muscle completely. Like a machine that has been oiled too much, there is no control. Some even contain very harsh chemicals which get reabsorbed into the system.
