Question by Danii: How do people with anorexia return to their normal eating habits without gaining weight?
I’ve heard that recovering from anorexia is a process in which one has to “wheedle oneself back up”, but that’s a little vague. How large of a calorie increase and how gradually should this be done in order to not gain weight? And is there more to it than that…?

Answer by Sharlene
You must gain weight to recover from anorexia. That’s kind of the point.

Question by Kat H: What are some of the characteristics of people with bulimia?
I have a friend that I think may have bulimia.
But she doesn’t go to the bathroom right after eating. Sometimes she waits like 15-20 minutes and sometimes not at all.
I’m not sure I understand all of bulimia. Since they throw up the food before absorbing it, don’t they just get hungry later? And are there physical signs, like in the throat or stomach a doctor could look for?

Question by Apache: How do people die from eating disorders?
Mainly anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. I have been doing research on the two eating disorders and I would like to find out what others have to say or think about the two.
The pictures that I’ve seen are haunting me!

Your body doesn’t have enough energy to keep going. Organs wither and fail from lack of upkeep. You die. The end.

Question posed by Tay L: What does people with bulimia usually feel like?
I’m just curious to see what people with bulimia feel like most of the time because whenever I read stuff about it it says you make yourself sick and tired and stuff.
Do you get like big headaches and stuff? Mood swings?

Question posed by PleaseHelp: How many calories a day do people with anorexia typicall eat?
I’ve heard some say anything under 1200 and others say no one with anorexia would eat more than 300 calories a day, so I was just wondering.
No, I’m not going to eat that little.
Thanks in advance!
My chosen answer:
Answer by Ringo Rosewood
Keep in mind that there are different types of eating disorders, combinations of disorders and different personalities. Anorexia is not defined by cal counts, it’s defined by the mental disorder and the persons habits. Those poor people who live in Africa and can’t eat aren’t anorexic even though they probably only consume a few hundred cals a day
I am dieting now and there are some day when I only eat 900 cals, but my diet is so full of veggies that I don’t even notice I am hungry. But if all someone at was a 150 calorie soda and a piece of chocolate cake, that 900 calories would be considered anorexic.
Anything under 500 is in the dangerous starvation zone. If a person is only getting this little (by choice) they probably have some type of disorder.

A question asked by the_lil_dark_angel: How does Jenny Craig work? Is if safe for people that had previous eating disorders?
I am asking and being 100% serious so please I am begging no stupid/insulting answers.
I am 21 and would like to lose weight, problem is I had an eating disorder for roughly 6yrs. I’ve been in recovery almost 2yrs so I’m doing good but it’s really hard to diet without crossing the line back into an eating disorder. I wanted to try weight watchers but they don’t allow people that had eating disorders to join.
So my question is how does Jenny Craig work? Is it anything like weight watchers?

I joined Jenny Craig and was on it for about a year. I lost about 40 lbs with it. It is a good program, though the meals are kind of expensive, but they have recipies that you can make on your own as well, and eating out isn’t forbidden or anything, lol. Most of the meals are pretty good and not much different than the frozen meals like Smart Ones, Healthy Choice, etc. While they do do calorie counting, weekly weigh-ins, and every month I think they measure your waist and bust, they are focused on losing weight healthily and the person that works with you is (usually) understanding and nice and if you’re having problems then you can usually talk with them about it. They should be kind of like a friend to go to. So anyways, JC promotes healthy weight loss, but it can be very easy to fall back into getting obsessed with the calorie counting and scale. But they try to remind you that your body has its ups and downs and not losing weight one week or even gaining isn’t the end of the world. So my answer is that it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you gave it a try but just try to keep thinking healthily and not obsessed.

Anorexia is not eating at all or eating tooooooo little. Bulimia is binging-purging either by throwing up or by exercising too much. Both are not advisable and are harmful to one’s health.

Question by Lena: What percentage of people who have had eating disorders regress back to the eating disorder later?
For example some say that 80% of dieters who lose weight gain the weight back within a certain amount of time. Well, how many people who overcome eating disorders regress back?
I tried googling but I couldn’t find anything, MISS.
Well you’re helpful aren’t you.

Answer by tappingxout
You couldn’t have googled this?
Edit – You did a pretty bad job of googling then.
Edit – I was just saying, no need to take it personally. If you really need help with this, here’s what came up when I searched it. About halfway down it says there’s a roughly 50% relapse rate.
